The Singles is a limited-edition CD box set by Lady Gaga, released exclusively in Japan on December 7, 2010. Limited to just 5,000 copies, the set compiles Gaga’s eight physically released singles at the time, spanning from "Just Dance" (2008) from her debut album The Fame to "Alejandro" (2010) from The Fame Monster. Each CD in the box set features two tracks, typically the original single and a remix, except for "Eh, Eh (Nothing Else I Can Say)," which uniquely include another remix of "Poker Face" instead.
The collection also includes a ninth disc: the previously U.S.-exclusive The Cherrytree Sessions (2009), augmented with a Japan-only bonus track, "Christmas Tree".
Background
International artwork for "The Remix".
This grey cardboard box set follows the same art direction as The Fame Monster, a clean minimalist aesthetic with the same typeface (News Gothic MT in Bold) and a photograph by Hedi Slimane from the album photoshoot. This particular black and white photograph of Gaga was previously used for various promotion in media and most notably, the digital cover for "Telephone" (2010). The main design difference is that the text on the front is displayed on the left side, mirroring the first-released in Japan compilation, The Remix released earlier that same year in March. The back of the box has the listing of the included singles. An unusual fact, the obi for this release was placed on the right side in order to cover the box opening. Another unusual fact is that the barcode is printed on the bottom of the box instead of being printed on the obi strip.
The artwork of the CD are reproduction of previously issued singles (generally based on the Australian releases). Every CD in the box is housed in a slimline jewel case with accompanying English and Japanese lyric booklets, the original singles did not have any lyrics printed. The Cherrytree Sessions CD is the only one with no lyrics. The CDs in the box do not have individual barcodes, as it is printed on the outside of the box instead.
- "Just Dance" and "LoveGame" both use the original artwork and track list from the Australian single release.
- "Poker Face" uses the artwork from Australia but with a different remix.
- "Eh, Eh" have the same track list but with a different artwork than the Australian release.
- "Paparazzi" is based on the German release.
- "Bad Romance" is based on the Australia/Germany/United Kingdom release but with a different track list.
- "Telephone" is based on the European release.
- "Alejandro" is based on the UK release but with the shorter radio edit of the Dave Audé Remix of "Alejandro" instead.
- "The Cherrytree Sessions" is based on its original release but revised to be a slim case with "Christmas Tree" as track 4.
