Sony Music Publishing LLC (formerly Sony/ATV Music Publishing for 1995–2021) is an American music publisher. Responsible for publishing the largest quantity of music, with over five million songs owned or administered as of end March 2021, it is part of Sony Music Group, which is itself owned by Japanese conglomerate Sony Group Corporation.

Background

In 2007, Lady Gaga began working as an intern at Famous Music, a publishing company owned by Paramount Pictures. Later that year, Famous Music was acquired by Sony/ATV Music Publishing. During her time there, Gaga gained early industry experience before securing her own publishing deal.

In 2008, Vincent Herbert introduced Gaga to Jody Gerson, then U.S. Co‑President of Sony/ATV, who signed her to the company. From 2008 to 2017, Sony/ATV administered the publishing rights to Gaga’s songs through a deal with her own imprint, House of Gaga Publishing. Since 2018, her catalog has been managed under SG Songs Worldwide, which continues to handle her songwriting rights in partnership with Sony/ATV.

In 2016, Gaga also signed a neighbouring rights agreement with Sony/ATV, covering the exploitation of her sound recordings through radio and television airplay.

Trivia

  • Sony Music Publishing serves as Gaga's music publisher, administering her songwriting rights. Broadcast Music, Inc. (BMI) licenses the public performance of her works and ensures that Gaga and the other songwriters and publishers receive royalties when her songs are played on radio, television, in live venues, or through other public broadcasts.
