"Shallow" is a song performed by Lady Gaga & Bradley Cooper from the soundtrack to the 2018 musical A Star Is Born. The track was written by Lady Gaga, Mark Ronson, Anthony Rossomando and Andrew Wyatt, and produced by Gaga and Benjamin Rice.

It was heard three times in the film, most prominently during a sequence when Cooper's character Jackson Maine invites Gaga's character Ally to perform it onstage with him. The scene was filmed at Greek Theater in Los Angeles.

The track received positive reviews from music critics who praised Gaga's vocals, the dramatic nature of the composition and the songwriting, while feeling it to be worthy of award nominations; It received a Golden Globe nomination as well as four Grammy Awards nominations. Besides Golden Globe and Grammy Awards, the song won an Oscar indeed. Unbelievably, song became one of Gaga's most successful songs selling over 10.000.000 pure copies & becoming most charting song by a female artist of all time.

Background

For developing the soundtrack of A Star Is Born, Gaga collaborated again with Mark Ronson with whom she had produced her fifth studio album, Joanne (2016). In her interview on Zane Lowe’s Beats 1 Radio premiering "Shallow", Gaga explained:

I worked on Shallow with Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt and Anthony Rossomando and we made this song for Ally and Jack and it’s such a special song. It’s two people talking to each other about the need and the drive to dive into the deep end and stay away from the shallow area. We were writing 'Shallow' from the point of view of Ally, it becomes part of the reason they fall in love. When I was writing music for the film I had to think about Ally as if she wasn't me. I went with a sound for her, even in the pop realm, that's unlike anything I've ever put out before.

The song first heard in the movie during an intimate, late-night, parking lot courtship scene between Ally, the aspiring singer played by Gaga with disarming charm, and Jackson Maine, Cooper’s grizzled country-rock superstar, "Shallow" roars to full life later in the film when Jackson invites Ally on stage to sing it during a concert at the Greek Theatre.

Release

Gaga announced the release date of the single a day before its release on social media. The track was premiered on September 27, 2018 as Zane Lowe's "World Record" on Beats 1 radio. Unbelievably, song became one of Gaga's most successful songs selling over 10.000.000 pure copies & becoming most charting song by a female artist of all time.

Performances

Lyrics

[Verse 1: Bradley Cooper]
Tell me somethin' girl
Are you happy in this modern world?
Or do you need more?
Is there somethin' else you’re searchin' for?

I’m falling
In all the good times I find myself longin' for change
And in the bad times I fear myself

[Verse 2: Lady Gaga]
Tell me something boy
Aren’t you tired tryin' to fill that void?
Or do you need more?
Ain’t it hard keeping it so hardcore?

I’m falling
In all the good times I find myself longing for change
And in the bad times I fear myself

[Chorus: Lady Gaga]
I’m off the deep end, watch as I dive in
I’ll never meet the ground
Crash through the surface, where they can’t hurt us
We’re far from the shallow now

[Post-Chorus: Lady Gaga & Bradley Cooper]
In the shallow, shallow
In the shallow, shallow
In the shallow, shallow
We’re far from the shallow now

[Bridge: Lady Gaga]
Wooaaaah
Woaaaaaaaaaaah

[Chorus: Lady Gaga]
I’m off the deep end, watch as I dive in
I’ll never meet the ground
Crash through the surface, where they can’t hurt us
We’re far from the shallow now

[Post-Chorus: Lady Gaga & Bradley Cooper]
In the shallow, shallow
In the shallow, shallow
In the shallow, shallow
We’re far from the shallow now
