Riddell Sports Group, commonly known as Riddell, is an American company founded in 1929 by John Tate Riddell (1885 - July 3, 1945), who was a native of Michigan and born in Georgetown. The brand specializes in sports equipment for Gridiron football. It was headquartered in Rosemont, Illinois, but in 2017, the company relocated to a new facility in Des Plaines, Illinois. John Tate Riddell became athletic director and football coach at Evanston High School in suburban Chicago in 1913, where he remained until 1927. This early interest in sports led him to the development of the removable football cleat and later into manufacturing athletic shoes. In February 1929, John T. Riddell, Inc., was formed. The company soon expanded into the manufacturing of other athletic supplies. Riddell specialized in cleats until 1939, when John Tate Riddell invented the plastic shell helmet. This was followed by the invention of the plastic suspension helmet in the early 1940s, which was used by the United States Military during the Second World War.
