A promotional concert—also called a promo concert, promotional gig, or promo show—is a live performance designed primarily to generate publicity, build hype, and support the marketing of a new release (album, single, tour announcement, or project), rather than to maximize revenue. Unlike standard concerts driven by ticket sales, promo shows often feature free or low-cost entry, limited capacity, or invitation-only access to attract targeted audiences such as media, influencers, fans, industry professionals, and radio DJs.

Long used in the music industry to spark buzz and secure coverage, promotional concerts range from high-profile to intimate pop-up shows designed for press impact and social media virality. Emerging and independent artists commonly rely on promo gigs—album launch parties, in-store record shop performances, or radio-sponsored free shows—to build exposure on limited budgets.

Promotional concerts are distinct from regular tour dates or festival performances, even when those include marketing elements like signings or merchandise. Sometimes appearing as “hybrid promo shows,” these performances are typically one-off events or short mini-runs—such as acoustic sessions, radio station sets, or small-club appearances—timed closely around a release, rather than part of a long, large-scale tour.
