Gaga and Ariana Grande performing "Rain On Me" at the 2020 MTV VMA.
In early 2020, Bobby Campbell, Gaga’s manager, revealed that nearly 18 months had gone into crafting an ambitious rollout for Chromatica—a campaign Interscope Records chairman/CEO John Janick praised as “one of the best album plans ever.” Yet the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic led to widespread cancellations, derailing brand partnerships, music videos, and key performances, including scheduled appearances at the 2020 iHeartRadio Music Awards and Coachella.
Despite these setbacks, Chromatica performance era debuted with a high-impact medley at the 2020 MTV Video Music Awards, marking the album’s only live televised promotion that year. In 2022, she mounted a global stadium tour, The Chromatica Ball, performing across eight countries. The era formally concluded with the release of the concert film Gaga Chromatica Ball on May 25, 2024, airing via HBO and Max.
While not officially part of the album’s campaign, Gaga’s Las Vegas residency Jazz & Piano (2019) resumed on October 14, 2021 and ran through July 6, 2024. The 2023 and 2024 shows featured an acoustic version of Chromatica first single, "Stupid Love," subtly weaving the album into a more stripped-down and intimate format.
2020
On August 30, 2020, Gaga performed a four-song medley ("Chromatica II", "911", "Rain on Me", and "Stupid Love") at the 2020 MTV Video Music Awards, her first VMA appearance in seven years. Grande accompanied the singer for "Rain on Me", both sporting face masks for the entire duration.
