"Perfect Celebrity" is a song by Lady Gaga from her seventh studio album, MAYHEM. The track was written by Gaga, Andrew Watt, Henry Walter, Mike Lévy and produced by Gaga, Watt and Cirkut.
Background
Lady Gaga first teased the song during the 2024 Olympics in Paris, on July 28th, 2024, when she stepped outside the hotel and surprised French fans by playing a snippet of it alongside "Abracadabra" via her iPad. The snippet slightly differed from the final version of the song: there was a different style of singing the lyrics "notorious being" while the instrumental was the same).
During her 2025 interview with PAPER Magazine, when asked about the lyrics "You love to hate me / I'm thе perfect celebrity", Lady Gaga explained how they relate to her rise to stardom:
- "There’s an element of being able to hate the celebrity that’s part of entertainment. It’s been a long time since I’ve grappled with fame on a song. I haven’t done it for a long time, so I returned to it and it’s something I’m super nervous to talk about. Because I feel really grateful for the career that I’ve had and I love being an artist, but it kind of just came out on that song."
In an interview with InStyle, Lady Gaga explained the lyrics "I've become a notorious being / Find my clone, she's asleep on the ceilin'" by saying: "It’s this idea that we all, in a way, have our real selves and then our clone version that we project to the world." She also further explained these lyrics during her interview with Zane Lowe for Apple Music: "[…] It’s almost like comical this idea that any time I’m in a room with anyone, there’s me, Stefani, and Lady Gaga sleeping on the ceiling and I have to figure out which body to be in."
