The modern Olympic Games or Olympics (French: Jeux olympiques) are the leading international sporting events featuring summer and winter sports competitions in which thousands of athletes from around the world participate in a variety of competitions. The Olympic Games are considered the world's foremost sports competition with more than 200 teams, representing sovereign states and territories, participating. By default, the Games generally substitute for any world championships during the year in which they take place (however, each class usually maintains its own records). The Olympic Games are held every four years. Since 1994, they have alternated between the Summer and Winter Olympics every two years during the four-year Olympiad. Their creation was inspired by the ancient Olympic Games, held in Olympia, Greece from the 8th century BC to the 4th century AD.
2024 Summer Olympics
The 2024 Summer Olympics, officially the Games of the XXXIII Olympiad and officially branded as Paris 2024, is an international multi-sport event taking place from 24 July to 11 August 2024 in France, with the opening ceremony having taken place on 26 July. Paris is the host city, with events held in 16 additional cities spread across Metropolitan France, and one subsite in Tahiti, French Polynesia.
Opening ceremony
The opening ceremony of the 2024 Summer Olympics took place on July 26, 2024 across Paris. For the first time in modern Olympic history, the opening ceremony was held outside of a stadium, with most of the procedures and performances taking place in several Paris landmarks and across the Seine River and most of the official protocols taking place at a temporary stadium in the Jardins du Trocadéro. The programme consisted of twelve chapters and featured a mix of live performances with filmed segments and animated sequences.
The first sequence, Enchanté, included the ceremony's first musical act which featured Lady Gaga and eight dancers waving large pink feather hand fans, all in custom Dior costumes, in a pre-recorded segment (filmed earlier during reharsals) alluding to "a cabaret feel" by performing "Mon Truc en Plumes," made famous by vedette Zizi Jeanmaire, on a golden staircase beside a black grand piano on the left bank of the Seine. Gaga wore a black satin bustier under a black feather jacket.
On July 28, 2024, Maud le Pladec, the choreographer behind the Olympics and Paralympics ceremonies reveals to Variety performance almost didn’t happen due to adverse weather conditions, She shared that Gaga’s number had to be pre-recorded hours before the ceremony commenced due to safety concerns prompted by the impending rain. Despite this precaution, Gaga ensured her vocals were delivered live.
“ | Unfortunately, it was the only [performance] that, for safety reasons, we had to pre-record late in the afternoon, once we knew for sure that it was going to rain — we had minute-by-minute updates, we had never watched the weather forecast so closely in our lives… We assessed that it was going to be too dangerous for performers, even with a few drops of rain. [Gaga] wanted to do it absolutely so we preferred to pre-record it rather than cancel it. The soil would have been slippery. She was wearing heels, very near the water, there were stairs… We had to be extremely cautious. | ” |
