Thierry Mugler
Mugler logo

Mugler (also stylized in all caps) is a fashion house founded by Manfred Thierry Mugler in 1975 until his retirement in 2003 following his final Haute Couture show. Manfred Thierry Mugler was born in Strasbourg, FR (21 December, 1948 — 23 January 2022). He was a photographer, stylist, painter, dancer, stage and video director, set designer, co-writer, and specialist in Art Direction and Perfume. When Nicola Formichetti became the creative director, the brand became simply known as Mugler with a new logo; since 2025, the brand's creative director is Miguel Castro Freitas. Manfred's creations are mainly seen in the music videos for "Paparazzi" and "Telephone". While Nicola Formichetti's creations under Mugler are seen in the music video of "Born This Way". Manfred's Origami Dress from the Fall Winter collection of 1991 was later recreated and reinterpreted by The Haus of Gaga in 2008-2009 and 2010-11 for The Monster Ball Tour. Mugler died on the 23rd of January 2022 of natural causes. Prior to his death, Manfred spent his last few years creating costumes for Kim Kardashian, while his older creations were worn by the likes of Cardi B and Celine Dion.

Creative Director

In 2010, Lady Gaga wrote a piece on what she thinks of her personal stylist, Nicola Formichetti’s, new position as creative director of Mugler.

Blood pumps through Nicola’s veins like perfume and cigarettes. His brain throbs with misfit royalty, glamour as punk survival, attitude as liberation, style as revolution. THIERRY MUGLER has a way with legendary lifestyle and Nicola is just that: Epic Lifestyle, Freakdom, Gorgeous or Die, The “fuck” in future poetry, the street in High-Fashion. Nicola Formichetti is Fashion’s Freedom. I love him, my friend the genius, my collaborator, more than any piece of clothing or closet I possess. But don’t tell him I said that, he’ll die. He picked them all out.
