Mayhem (stylized in all caps) is the seventh studio album by American singer-songwriter Lady Gaga, it was released on March 7th, 2025.
Background and conception

Typewritten lyrics of "Disease" shared on October 24th, 2024 via Instagram.
In an interview with Vogue, Lady Gaga revealed that the inspiration for MAYHEM came from a period of deep introspection and personal challenges. She described the album as a "genre-bending journey" that reflects her diverse musical influences and life experiences. The album was conceived during the latter half of 2023, as Gaga sought to channel her personal struggles and triumphs into her music.
In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, Gaga described MAYHEM as an album that "leaps around genre in a way that’s almost corrupt". She emphasized that the album is a celebration of the music that shaped her career, featuring a mix of different genres, styles, and dreams. The album is expected to be a deeply personal project, reflecting Gaga's journey through music and life.
Themes and lyrics
MAYHEM delves into themes of chaos, self-discovery, and healing. The lyrics are a mix of dark and uplifting narratives, drawing from Gaga's personal experiences and broader societal issues. The lead single, "Disease," tackles themes of addiction and recovery.
Production and music
The album features a diverse array of musical styles, including synth-pop, disco, dance-pop and industrial. During her interview with Elle magazine, she listed the musical influencer on the album as "90s alternative, electro-grunge, Prince and Bowie melodies, guitar and attitude, funky bass lines, French electronic dance and analog synths." Gaga produced and wrote the album alongside Andrew Watt and Cirkut (except for "Blade of Grass" and "Die With A Smile") with contribution by Gesaffelstein on four tracks. Michael Polansky also helped songwriting on seven songs and James Fauntleroy on two songs.
Title and artworks
The album cover was revealed on January 27, 2025, presents a black-and-white collage portrait of Gaga with messy black hair. The collage is made up of two manually sliced photographs joined together, a shard of glass put in diagonal and 3 other photographs (2 seen on the left and the last one is not visible on the cropped album artwork). The design reflects the album’s themes of chaos and fragmentation. The back cover continues the monochromatic aesthetic, featuring the album title MAYHEM in a distorted, edgy font, while "Lady Gaga" appears in a more traditional serif typeface, with the first "A" flipped upside down. The concept and photography for the album visuals were taken by Frank Lebon with .
In an interview with Elle, Gaga shared that the album is centered around a fictional character named MAYHEM, whose presence is woven throughout the record’s fourteen songs. She described the project as an exploration of life’s disorder and unpredictability, explaining:
“ | The album was called Mayhem to memorialize a piece of me and a piece of life that is not always easy to accept. It was hard at first to name the album Mayhem because I so much don't want that feeling to be real. I am also a hopeful person. I'm also somebody that is a dreamer, but what I think I ultimately arrived at is; it's all of the fractures of who we are and the fractures in the world and the mayhem of that brokenness that ultimately teaches us the power of joy, and dancing and crying and laughing and listening to music and holding your friends and your family and repeat! This album is fun and I enjoyed the contrast of a fun album that's also called Mayhem. | ” |
—Lady Gaga for Elle |
In addition to the standard album cover, Mayhem features several alternative artworks, each offering a unique visual interpretation of the album’s chaotic and fractured themes. These alternate covers are available in special editions, exclusive retailer versions, and regional releases.
One of the most striking alternative artwork is Store Exclusive cover to the deluxe vinyl and CD edition. This version presents Gaga in a high-contrast red and black aesthetic, with smudged makeup and intense, shadowy lighting. The typography remains jagged and distorted, reinforcing the concept of unpredictability and raw emotion.
Several major retailers, such as Target, Walmart, and Amazon, offer exclusive cover variations:
- Target Exclusive: A softer, yet haunting portrayal of Gaga, where she is surrounded by shattered mirror shards reflecting different expressions of herself.
- Walmart Edition: features a different take on Mayhem, with Gaga wearing an avant-garde, punk-inspired outfit, adorned with safety pins and ripped fabric.
- Amazon Exclusive: A close-up shot of Gaga’s face with smeared black paint, her eyes piercing through the chaos.

Promotion and release
Promotion for the album began in October 2024 with the release of the lead single, "Disease."
During the 2024 Olympics in Paris, on July 28th, 2024, after announcing on her Instagram story, Lady Gaga stepped outside the hotel and surprised French fans by playing snippets of "Abracadabra" and "Perfect Celebrity" via her iPad.
Before the official announcement of the album title Lady Gaga repeatedly mentioned the word "chaos" and laid an emphasis on it in her interviews and social media posts. Hence, it was speculated that the album would be called "Chaos." On January 23rd, 2025, a tweet saying "Are we a result of the mayhem that surrounds us, or was the chaos inside me all along. 🖤"[1] was posted on Jo Calderone's Twitter account.
One week prior to the official announcement of the release date of the album, the title "Mayhem" and animated extended album cover could be found in the source code of Lady Gaga's official website. On January 27th, 2025, a few hours prior to the official announcement from Lady Gaga herself and the end of count down on her official website, a digital billboard revealing the album title "MAYHEM", its artwork and release date "MARCH 7" appeared in New York City and Las Vegas.
MAYHEM (Album Trailer)
In the October 2024 issue of Vogue US, it was revealed that "a new pop record [Lady Gaga] has taken to calling LG7 [...] comes out in February [2025]". However, on January 27th, 2025, it was announced that MAYHEM is set to be released on March 7th, 2025.

The website features an interactive element allowing users to reveal fragmented lyrics by drawing on the screen. The cryptic presentation aligns with the album’s dark, chaotic themes. Monsters: For nearly two decades, we've known and loved each other. You've been with me and my music through so many twists and turns. Whether I'm writing about the chaos of disease, witches casting spells in a nightclub, waking up as a zombie after being bitten on the dance floor, the strange way fame can feel like having a clone, or disappearing into pop oblivion with the person you love—you've always reminded me that I can be exactly who I want to be. Because when I looked out into the crowd, you were always exactly who you wanted to be. In all the ways we didn't know who we were back then, we've been finding ourselves together. And I think I'm still doing that with you. Thank you for being on this ride with me, no matter what. I'm truly, exceptionally, unspeakably grateful for that. My wish is that when you listen to these songs, you find a place to pour out all your negative thoughts and let the music carry you away—away from your own mayhem and into the mayhem of the music. I want to give special thanks to my love, Michael, for the beautiful work you poured into this album every single day for over a year—and beyond. Your encouragement and love were constant, but you're also a completely brilliant creative partner. I've always been a renaissance woman, and I've often felt misunderstood anytime someone tried to put me in a box. I think we're so similar in that way. You can do anything. I've never seen anyone work as hard as you do. I don't think anyone in my life understands MAYHEM the way you do. I love this album with you. Thank you for making MAYHEM with me. Thank you to Andrew Watt and Cirkut for their tireless work and endless talent. Thank you to Gesaffelstein and Bruno Mars for sharing with me their artistry and for supporting me in mine. Thank you to Paul LaMalfa, Tyler Harris, Serban Ghenea, Randy Merrill, Bobby Campbell, Lindsay Shane, Stacey Quinn, Sonya Guardo, Bryan Lourd, John Janick, Steve Berman, and the Interscope team. Thank you to Arthur Fogel and Live Nation. Thank you to Todd Tourso and Mel Roy. Well Monsters: here we are again. Face to face. I made this for you. |
