The first mention of the song came with a tweet on [[10 February|February 10]], [[2013]] which included the lyric: "''I would rather be poor and happy than rich and alone''". The song was performed at the [[ITunes Festival|iTunes Festival]] and she explained that the song was written when [[The Born This Way Ball]] was canceled.

The song was supposed to be included on ''[[ARTPOP (album)|ARTPOP]]'', but Gaga opted to replace it with "[[Dope (song)|Dope]]", A new song created using the melody of the song but different lyrics. Shortly after the iTunes Festival, Bobby Campbell of the [[Haus of Gaga]] confirmed that "I Wanna Be With U" became "Dope". The song references her song, "[[Born This Way (song)|Born This Way]]" in the line ''"cause I was born this way"''

While performing "Dope" at the final artRAVE in Paris, Lady Gaga performed a short version of "I Wanna Be With You".

The studio version of the song leaked on September 11th, 2019.
