Gaga Chromatica Ball is a concert special produced, directed, and created by Lady Gaga based on her 2022 tour The Chromatica Ball. The film premiered on HBO and Max on May 25th, 2024.

Background

The concept for Gaga Chromatica Ball emerged following Lady Gaga's highly successful The Chromatica Ball tour, which took place in summer and fall of 2022. The tour was in support of Gaga's sixth studio album, Chromatica, which was released in May 29th, 2020. The Chromatica Ball tour included performances across Europe, North America, and Asia, showcasing Gaga's dynamic stage presence and elaborate visual spectacles.

Filming and Production

The concert film was recorded during the North American leg of The Chromatica Ball on September 10th, 2022, at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, California. Gaga's performance at Dodger Stadium was a sold-out event, with a crowd of 52,000 fans in attendance.

Gaga took to social media to share insights into the filming process, revealing that the concert was captured using 30 cameras and filmed in a single take. This dedication to authenticity and capturing the energy of her live performances adds a unique dimension to the concert film.

Announcement and Promotion

I wanted to share a more personal moment with you today, I know I haven’t been doing a lot of that lately and some of you are really longing for me to share more of my artistic process. I’ve been experiencing my creativity ever since last summer in a really special and private way—I wrote and produced music for a special project, I prepared for months developing my character for Joker, I filmed Joker for many months (a very introspective time), I have been running my start-up Haus Labs, doing philanthropic work, and additionally have been working on The Chromatica Ball film edit. I can say for the first time in many years that my love of making art, music, fashion, and supporting community has never been more fulfilling. I may not be sharing as much of myself online as I have in the past, but I hope you know this time to myself has been extremely healing and recharging for my heart, mind, body, and creativity—to create within myself and to have a personal life that’s just for me. I’m sure that may feel different because I haven’t always been so private (I bet that will make some of you laugh)—but I LOVE my fans, my little monsters, so much and that will never change. I can’t even begin to describe how much our global community inspires me every day to bring as much joy as I can to your lives. Here’s a photo of my working on The Chromatica Ball film edit (that’s a frame from the film behind me)—I can’t WAIT for you to experience it. Thank you for being willing to grow with me so that I can change and transform with the community I love so much. I hope you love all the things I’ve been creating for you and I hope this is a small reminder to you of my deep passion and commitment to art. 🖤

The official announcement of Gaga Chromatica Ball came out on May 8th, 2024, via Gaga's social media channels. The announcement confirmed that the concert film would premiere on HBO and Max on May 25th, 2024, generating widespread anticipation among Gaga's fanbase. In her announcement, Gaga revealed she produced, directed and edited film.

I’m so excited that we can finally share The Chromatica Ball film with the world. This film chronicles a time of immense creativity…the fashion, the dance, the music. Revisiting the tour leaves me speechless the way we had each other—you all showed up for music and art in a big way, and with a level of excitement and freedom that I will never forget. Stadium after stadium. Sold out crowds. The deafening singalongs.

Chromatica was colorful revenge. The chaos of it all became pure energy and life. With a texture best experienced live.

“STRUT IT OUT, WALK A MILE SERVE IT ANCIENT CITY STYLE”

Self-acceptance is a theme that cuts through all my songs. I believe it is always possible to dig deep and find your greatness. Self-discovery is an art. Self-love is a practice.

I love you monsters more than I can say. See yourself in every vocal, every fabric choice, the choreography, every image… Here’s the truth—no matter where life or my career has taken me, my time with you always is a path back to a very powerful part of myself. In a stadium filled with YOU it came to life. Thank you for that feeling 🙏 🖤 I hope you will feel seen when you watch this film. And know that I edited it carefully to honor you.
