"Sine From Above" (also known as "Sine") is a song by Lady Gaga from her sixth studio album, Chromatica. The song features English singer Elton John. The track was written by Gaga, Michael Tucker, Elton John, Axel Hedfors, Johannes Klahr, Rami Yacoub, Richard Zastenker, Ryan Tedder, Sebastian Ingrosso, Benjamin Rice, Vincent Pontare and Salem Al Fakir, and produced by BloodPop®, Burns, Axwell, Klahr and Liohn.

Background

Lady Gaga and Elton John have been close friends for many years and performed together multiple times, beginning with their "Poker Face / Speechless / Your Song" medley performance on the 2010 Grammy Awards. They also have a handful of unreleased collaborations: a duet version of "Hello Hello" intended for Gnomeo & Juliet soundtrack, a piano ballad intended for ARTPOP and "Room in my Heart" intended for Joanne. "Sine From Above" marks Gaga and Elton's first collaboration to get an official release.

After the release of the Chromatica tracklisting, many of Gaga's collaborators reposted it and specified which tracks they worked on. Of these collaborators, Johannes Klahr and Liohn acknowledged that they had co-written "Sine From Above".[1][2]

It was later confirmed that the track was originally written for Elton John with Ryan Tedder and Sebastian Ingrosso in 2014. In a 2020 interview with Entertainment Weekly, Axwell revealed that the song started out with just Elton singing on it, describing it as "a more chilled out, piano, acoustic thing". Burns stated that Elton was on tour in Australia during the time, with the deadline to finish the song fast approaching. It was eventually recorded via Skype, with Elton in a studio in Australia and Gaga in Hollywood. The Australian session was engineered by Nick Rowse in Studio One of Forbes Street Studios and assisted by James Raper on January 27th, 2020.

In an interview for American Songwriter, Lady Gaga told about making this song with Elton John:

[Elton] had started [the song] first and then he sent it over and I listened to it and I loved it and then I finished it and I sent I back and I said, “Do you like it, do you like it?” He loved it. We decided to record it and it became so special. I love that song more than anything. I remember when we were finishing it, I was hard – I pressed on all the guys to make it like almost speed-core at the end. Just this sonic explosion. It was because I wanted to – I wanted this song to have a range, where it began in a very organic, melodic way and then it ended in some sort of cacophony. A cacophony that I’m now comfortable with. I think, you know, when you go through hard things, it’s not necessarily about those hard things being over for you to be okay. I think it’s about you being okay with the hard things. It’s building resilience. “Sine From Above” is so much about resilience.

Lyrics

[Lady Gaga]:
When I was young, I prayed for lightning
My mother said it would come and find me
I found myself without a prayer
I lost my love and no one cared
When I was young, I prayed for lightning

Yeah, I looked
With my face up to the sky, but I saw nothing there
No, no, nothing there
Yeah, I stared
While my eyes filled up with tears, but there was nothing there
No, no, nothing

I heard one sine from above
I heard one sine from above
Then the signal split in two
The sound created stars like me and you
Before there was love, there was silence
I heard one sine
And it healed my heart, heard a sine

Healed my heart, heard a sine
Healed my heart, heard a sine

[Elton John]:
When I was young, I felt immortal
And not a day went by without a struggle

[Lady Gaga & Elton John]:
I lived my days just for the nights
I lost myself under the lights
When I was young, I felt immortal

Yeah, I looked
With my face up to the sky, but I saw nothing there
No, no, nothing there
Yeah, I stared
While my eyes filled up with tears, but there was nothing there
No, no, nothing

I heard one sine from above
I heard one sine from above
Then the signal split in two
The sound created stars like me and you
Before there was love, there was silence
I heard one sine
And it healed my heart, heard a sine

Healed my heart, heard a sine
Healed my heart, heard a sine

[Lady Gaga]:
Then the signal split in two
The sound created stars like me and you
Before there was love, there was silence

[Elton John]:
I heard one sine

[Lady Gaga & Elton John]: (Elton John):
And it healed my heart, heard a sine (heard a sine)

[Lady Gaga]:
Healed my heart
Healed my-
Heart, heard a-
Sine
Healed my-
Heart, heard a sine
