Background

Frequent Ridley Scott collaborator Janty Yates was the costume designer for the film.

“	We started six weeks of research and development during lockdown and then production from September, ahead of six months spent in Rome shooting and making the film earlier this year. The movie spanned a 20-year period in which fashion changed dramatically — 1975 to 1995 — so there had to be real range in the costumes, plus everything had to be made for L.G. [Ms. Yates’s nickname for Lady Gaga], Adam Driver and other actors like Jared Leto. Naturally I concentrated on the stars, but there was a cast of about 80 in total, and I also rented all the costumes for all the crowd and extras. I am completely responsible for all of it. The buck stops with me.	”

For the costumes, they used a mix of vintage items, Gaga's own personal fashion archive, loans from houses like Alaïa and Valentino and had a tailor (Dominic Young) with five seamstresses on call to make looks. They even had access to the Gucci archives but only used two archival looks: when we see Gaga in a double G tunic and trousers with leather trim on 42nd Street finding cheap fakes, and when she's in a double G silk blouse and leather skirt when she receives her divorce papers.

While Gaga’s Patrizia is obsessed with the Gucci name product, Yates found that the real-life Patrizia preferred to wear other brands like Yves Saint Laurent during her heyday as Lady Gucci. At the time Patrizia was living the jet set life as Maurizio’s wife, Gucci was more well-known for their accessories and leather goods and their clothing was more staid; to communicate this, Yates relied on Dominic Young, a cutter, who custom made costumes that resembled YSL dresses and Chanel suits of the time.

In keeping with her character, Gaga also requested that there would be no costume repeats in for the scenes in her 54 script days, which resulted in a total of 65 costume changes. The inspiration for the costumes were a mix of real-life Patrizia, Italian actor Gina Lollobrigida whom Scott modelled Patrizia after and Gaga's desire to dress like her Italian mother did at that time.

Wardrobe

The costumes were shown at House of Gucci Exhibit at the FIDM Museum on November 23 until December 4, 2021 in Los Angeles. Another one in New York City by the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising at Fotografiska rom on December 5 until December 7, 2021. Finally, VIP Fan Auctions sold 272 lots from the movie on June 16 to 30, 2022.
