"Close to You" or "(They Long To Be) Close To You" is a song written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David with sections of the early version written by Cathy Steeves. The best-known version is that recorded by American duo The Carpenters for their second studio album Close to You (1970) and produced by Jack Daugherty.
The song was recorded by Lady Gaga for Harlequin (2024), her companion album to the musical thriller film Joker: Folie à Deux (2024). The song was produced by Gaga and Benjamin Rice.
Lyrics
Why do birds suddenly appear every time you are near?
Just like me, they long to be close to you
Why do stars fall down from the sky every time you walk by?
Just like me, they long to be close to you
On the day that you were born, the angels got together
And decided to create a dream come true
So they sprinkled moon dust in your hair
Of gold and starlight in your eyes of blue
That is why (that is why)
All the girls in town (girls in town)
Follow you (follow you)
All around (all around)
Just like me, they long to be close to you
On the day that you were born, the angels got together
And decided to create a dream come true
So they sprinkled moon dust in your hair
Of gold and starlight in your eyes of blue, hoo-hoo
That is why (that is why)
All the girls in town (girls in town)
Follow you (follow you)
All around (all around)
Just like me, they long to be so close to you
Oh, just like me, they long to be so close to you
Just like me, they long to be so close to you
