The Brit Awards (stylized as the BRIT Awards; often simply called the Brits) are the British Phonographic Industry's annual pop music awards and the British equivalent of the American Grammy Awards.

2009

Award show

The 2009 BRIT Awards ceremony took place on Wednesday February 18th, 2009. It was the 29th edition of the British Phonographic Industry's annual pop music awards. The awards ceremony was held at Earls Court Exhibition Centre in London.

This was Lady Gaga's first award aceremony.

Performance

Gaga performed a medley with the Pet Shop Boys and Brandon Flowers, of The Killers. The Pet Shop Boys performed a medley of "Suburbia," "Love Etc.," "Left to My Own Devices," "Always on My Mind," "Go West," "What Have I Done to Deserve This?," "I’m With Stupid," "Being Boring," "It's a Sin," "All Over the World," and "West End Girls." Of these, Lady Gaga performed during the "What Have I Don to Deserve This?" and "West End Girls" portions, the latter of which she performed in harmony with Brandon Flowers.
The Pet Shop Boys needed a "wonderful young singer" to sing the "Dusty" part of the medley for the event. When they heard "Just Dance" on the radio, they decided that they would approach Lady Gaga to perform with them.

Interview

Interviewer 1: "Hey y'all."
Interviewer 2: "Hey y'all."
Interviewer 1: "Welcome to the BRIT encore. And welcome to Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe and Lady Gaga."
Interviewer 2: "Hooray. Hooray. 100 hoorays."
Interviewer 1: "Wow. Massive Pet Shop Boy action and the Gaga. Where did this marriage of minds musicalness come together?"
Neil Tennant: "It just came because at the beginning of this year, we were thinking we need a wonderful girl singer to sing the 'Dusty part' of 'What Have I Done to Deserve This?' and miraculously, at number one on our charts, a record called 'Just Dance' by Lady Gaga appeared and we thought 'It's her.'"
Interviewer 1: "Yeah,"
Interviewer 2: "So Gaga, you sat at home, your phone rings, you pivk it up."
Lady Gaga: "Yeah."
Interviewer 2: "Delighted by the call?"
Lady Gaga: "I said, 'Yeah, right.' I said, 'Yeah, sure." I mean it was just a dream come true. I can't imagine anyone more iconic than these guys that I would have dreamed to performed with. It's my first award show as well, so..."
Neil Tennant: "Is it?!"
Lady Gaga: "Yeah."
Chris Lowe: "Oh, wow. Thanks for that."
Neil Tennant: "The first of many."
Lady Gaga: "You popped my cherry."
Neil Tennant: "Well, thank you. Thank you for letting us."
Interviewer 1: "Oh what a way to make an entrance."
Interviewer 2: "I never saw that happening. I never ever saw that happening."
Neil Tennant: "We've always been full of surprise. The Pet Shop Boys."
Interviewer 2: "Yes! I believe tonight you have a special announcement."
Interviewer 1: "You're getting married."
Interviewer 2: "A lifetime achievement, though."
Neil Tennant: "No. Outstanding contribution."
Interviewer 2: "Outstanding contribution. I apologize."
Interviewer 1: "Outstanding contribution."
Interviewer 2: "Outstanding contribution, yeah."
Neil Tennant: "Outstanding contribution, you get one of these. You know what, these were nicer than they were in the 80s."
Chris Lowe: "In the 80s. They were horrible things. They were like twigs that fell off. Did you ever see one?"
Interviewer 2: "Yeah."
Interviewer 1: "No. What? They looked quite heavy."
Chris Lowe: "You don't know what I mean. They were awful. This one is quite, this is a bit like a fellow, isn't it."
Neil Tennant: "It's almost as good as that."
Interviewer 1: "How many awards have you got? Are they cluttering up your loft at home? Where do you keep them all?"
Neil Tennant: "In my downstairs loo."
Interviewer 1: "It's a classic, a lot of people do that."
Interviewer 2: "You must have the world's largest downstairs loo. I mean, it's not like you've had a lack of..."
Neil Tennant: "Well, no. In the downstairs loo I only have the BRITs and the Ivor Novellos."
Interviewer 2: "Is that for the sake of good rhyming slang?"
Neil Tennant: "The rest are up in the attic."
Interviewer 2: "Really?"
Neil Tennant: "Actually the gold disks are actually given away because people say "Do you have anything for some charity?," "Can you sign...?" and I go in and find a Finnish gold disk for Behavior or something. It's a shame, we had to stop giving them away, cause they keep disappearing."
Interviewer 1: 'Listen, you guys. You're going to go off and party or something together. Are you gonna show Gaga a good time, now?"
Chris Lowe: "I don't think we need to show Gaga a good time, do we?"
Lady Gaga: "Oh my goodness. yes! I'm so, I'm not going alone tonight. I'm gonna follow them all night. Please hang out with me. Hang out with me."
Neil Tennant: "I think she might show us a good time. I might get on the wrong chart. Look a little child"
Interviewer 1: "Guys, great seeing you. Amazing performance, by the way. It's mind blowing."
Neil Tennant: "Thanks. Thank you."
