Lady Gaga performed on the main stage and was quoted as "monster avant-garde pop fantasia". She opened the show in a symbolic manner - her dance team brought her on stage in a coffin prop and she opened it and stepped out to perform Born This Way. Before performing a medley of songs from The Fame Monster, she thanked the host Radio 1 for playing her music and giving her the opportunity to come to the UK and perform there. Further in the show, before introducing her friend and colleague Brian Newman for the next segment, she said she wanted to surprise the audience and do something different and talked about her high school days. Before performing Speechless, she expressed her gratuity to Elton John for performing the song with her and to the fans for supporting her and her father while he was sick. During The Edge Of Glory, she became very emotional and talked to the audience about the inspiration for writing the song, which she found in her grandfather.
