Azzedine Ben Alaya (26 February 1935 – 18 November 2017) was a Tunisian fashion designer and shoe designer. He studied sculpture at the Tunis Institute of Fine Arts before leaving to focus on fashion. He moved in June of 1956 to work at Christian Dior for 5 days before getting fired and instead, started privately making clothes to high society clients. On June 30, 1958, Alaïa met French fashion designer Guy Laroche, who he started working for during three seasons, until November 1959. In 1964, he opened his own workshop. At the same time, he changed the spelling of his surname to Alaïa.
In 1965, he created the prototype of the Mondrian dress for Yves Saint Laurent. In March of 1971, he became a member of the Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne. Later, Thierry Mugler asked him to create tuxedo suits for his Fall/Winter 1979–80 collection, Futures Spirales. He debuted his first collection in New York in 1982. Alaïa finally founded his eponymous brand Alaïa in 1983 and presented his first fashion show in Paris, the Spring/Summer 1983 collection.
Pieter Mulier was appointed as the new creative director of Alaïa in February 2021 and his debut was the Spring/Summer 2022 collection. Prior to that, the company used items from the archive to release new collections after Spring/Summer 2018.
