Ahead of the release of the new @jokermovie (“Joker: Folie à Deux”), which hits theaters Friday, Lady Gaga sat down for a tea and a talk about her experience playing Harley Quinn and how it inspired her new album, “Harlequin.”
“I really love the way that reality and fiction and music and film and pop culture — all of these things can have a relationship if we want them to,” says Lady Gaga. “I think that the way that we told the story in the movie was so surreal, and I think that I want to apply that surrealism to my own music.”
“This is a special record for me because it’s kind of my celebration of all the masks that I’ve worn in my career but in one person — and allowing it to be an expression of that light,” Lady Gaga goes into say.

- "I would say that Harlequin is a companion piece to Joker, and it is meant to be enjoyed along with the movie, but it's also a completely separate experience. I didn't want to be beholden to any one genre. I wanted it to be as defiant as the character. And I just wasn't done with the music when the movie was done filming. So, the record is an exploration of Lee, but I think in the way it's also just a celebration of the way that women are really complex creatures."

I love our version of "Close to You," because I love Karen Carpenter. It, like, shows the sweet side of my character. This album is meant to be listened to in its entirety. Like, just beginning with "Good Morning" at the top, it has this, like, nostalgia that's mixed with modern pop. You know, whether you're having, like, a crazy dinner party with your friends or you're curled up at home, it's like really enjoyable listening experience, and it's meant to be really fun. And I think I really drafted off of the manic energy of the character and the music, because in this world of darkness that's in Joker, I feel like Lee has all this light, and I wanted this record to be, like, the light."
